Virtual AGM

We had our first ever virtual community event on the 28th June 2020. We discussed whats been happening and whats on offer at Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field.
Never before have we appreciated our outside space like we are doing now but the park is at risk. If you have enjoyed the park for any reason, we encourage you to support and be involved in decisions that will impact its future - get involved to see how you could be involved - it does not have to be a huge commitment.

Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra (based) in Wimbledon are celebrating their 75th anniversary.  As part of their celebrations they are planting 100 trees at Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field with the support of the Merton Tree Wardens and the Friends of the Park in February. They will be planting native trees such as wild cherry, silver birch, dog rose and oak. The 'Stoneleigh Copse' will be an addition to the Millennium Woodland. The Youth Orchestra has two anniversary concerts, one at Cadogan Hall and another at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank this Spring and Summer. FIND OUT MORE

Sir Joe's Party in the Park! Result!

Nearly £1,500 raised¬

Thank you to everyone who came to this years second party in the park on 1st September. The weather was amazingly hot and it was lovely to see all the local support. We raised just under £1,500 so thank you to all. The Scout run BBQ raised an amazing £850 towards the wonderful 22nd Wimbledon Group.

We were delighted to award a certificate to Chris Ziajka for his outstanding contribution to the community of Motspur Park, maintaining the Park in his free time. Chris has always supported the Friends and other sporting organisations that use the park. Having worked for the council for many years, he lives in the Park and is ideally positioned to keep an eye on things and in the absence of a Park keeper we are so glad he is there. He goes above an beyond and can often be seen litter picking, painting and generally keeping things tip top. Thank you Chris on behalf of the whole community.

Raised £375

Despite the rain, we were delighted with the show of support at our 2nd "Fun Family Dog show" on 12th May 2018. The rain didn't dampen our spirits as we celebrated our four legged companions.  Thank you to all those that came along and contributed their time, paws, tricks and cakes etc. We had some incredible entries and the judges struggled to choose between them all!

Thank you to Becky at Rebecca Challis Photography who donated her time and photos free of charge and captured some wonderful images some of which can be seen in our gallery). You can download your favourites here using the password dog. Thank you also to our sponsors Park Vets, all our Judges and our stall holders Lea at Like Designs, Kelly and Lisa at Jamberry Nails and Anna who all came to support the event. A firm favourite in the Friends diary, the dog show will be back in 2019 so start practicing your tricks now! Can't wait a whole year? Bring your dogs along to our Party in the Park on 1st September 2018 and have a go on our dog agility course.

Family Friendly Plastic Free Picnic 22nd April 1 - 3pm.

FREE - Raising Awareness

Local families were supported by Sustainable Merton to organise the first Plastic Free Picnic in Merton this year on Earth Day, 22nd April. At the picnic in Sir Joe's, Children learnt all about using bees wax wraps instead of cling film and re-usable boxes instead of throw away containers. The feedback was wonderful and the sun shone for all to enjoy. This will be one for the Calendar so watch out for this in 2019.

Annual General Meeting

We held our AGM on 26th November 2017 at 11am in the Pavilion of the Park.

Since the beginning of 2017, IDVerde have taken over the contract for maintaining Merton Council's Green Spaces. This has meant some significant Operational changes which will have an impact on Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field and the Friends group. During the AGM we discussed progress in light of these changes including funds and fund-raising objectives.

You can read the minutes of the meeting here.

Public Power Overturns Parking Payment

We were delighted to hear that the decision to implement parking measures in SJHMPF were overturned when the public made their feelings known in response to the consultation. Our Chair, Jane, pulled together a fantastic letter making the case (as a lawyer she's pretty good at these things) and together with a huge petition set up by Rascalls softly and the support of our local councillors, the decision was overturned!

Playball - borrow a basket ball - Sports England Sponsored Scheme

During the opening hours of THE HUT, you can borrow a basket ball to play by signing it in and out of the hut.

Fun Day

Raised over £1000

We held the first ever Sir Joes Part in the Park on Saturday 8th July. Despite there being numerous other local events, the public came out in support and we raised over £1000. Thank you to all who helped and who came along.

Fun Family Dog Show

75 dogs later.....we raised a spectacular £750 at the dog show on 14th May 2017! The best fun dog show in Surrey? Certainly the most beautiful and well behaved dogs. Who knew what talented pooches we have in our community, best trick was a hotly contested class!

Park Vets Rayners Park deserve an award for sponsoring the event.
